Most workforce tools are built for offices, then sold to operators who work nights, weekends and other people’s premises. On The Shift is built the other way round.
Why this exists
Every operator we spoke to ran the same four systems: a spreadsheet for the rota, WhatsApp to tell people about it, a paper book for attendance and a second spreadsheet for licences. None of them agreed with each other, and the gaps between them were where the money and the compliance failures lived.
The answer was not another scheduling app. It was one system where the rota knows who is qualified, check-in becomes the timesheet, and the timesheet becomes both payroll and the client invoice — so the numbers cannot quietly drift apart.

What we believe about safety features
A safety feature that has not been tested on the actual handset is worse than no safety feature, because someone changes their behaviour believing it will work. We do not ship a lone-worker feature we have not watched fire on a real device.
The same principle decides what happens when an account goes unpaid. We will suspend the dashboard. We will not take the SOS button off a guard who is alone on a site at 2am, because a commercial dispute between us and their employer is not their problem and they did not agree to be the leverage.
How we build
Slowly, in the boring places. Money is stored in integer pence. Every row that belongs to a business carries its id and every query filters on it. Audit records cannot be edited or deleted, including by us — which occasionally makes our own housekeeping awkward, and that is the correct trade.
